谢锡明——艺坛 奇葩
走进画家谢锡明先生的万绿画廊,感觉有点像走入名人馆、文化馆,乃至博物馆。展墙上挂着都是“陈嘉庚”、“林连玉”、“林晃昇”、“伍连德”等先贤的肖像,重视着先贤的光辉、弘扬精神与散发人格魅力;另一边厢又是华、巫、印族生活习俗的写真,打破了种族的框框,同时也在述说人文,传承历史。
谢老师的画非常注重艺术性、教育性和真实性,善于水彩画、油画和粉画,尤其精专于对人类脸部的素描,也是被公认为最难掌握的。放眼看去,墙上的无论哪一幅,都离不开人,生动深刻,呼之欲出,都称得上是上佳作品。

人舍我取,一生填补艺术界的空白
其中一幅是一位老人,穿着单薄的白衫和黑卷筒裤走在烈日炎炎的南洋泥路上。老华侨青筋暴露,坚韧不拔精神的展现,历尽风霜的见证。

儿时回忆注入画中
谢老师说,这就是他小时候看到的老华侨,一把油伞,和一支扁担,便可以养活全家,落地生根,而腕上的玉镯,是没钱是拿来变卖的。
还有一幅背景为战乱画面的小女孩,一脸无助的愁容,像是在为人类的明天而担心,又仿佛在思考自己眼前的路。
不少走进来的人被这既是历史文化,也是民族国家的大熔炉所感动。不过,谢老师坦言,他的这些画,并不比一般市场上具有商业价值的画作,比较难卖,因此在坚持本身之画家理想的当儿,还必须兼职教学绘画,以养家糊口,这三十多年就这样走过来。
由于谢老师的个性比较木讷寡言,很多时候都由贤内助,也是画家的巫雪英代复。巫老师补充,虽然也曾有不少人出过高价购买其作品,但其市场真的相对较小。纵使一路走来并不容易,不过谢老师却因为一种使命感而继续走下去,始于使命,忠于使命。

写实画派市场小
“艺术家本来就不容易当,尤其是写实画派这一块是比较少人感兴趣的,因此必须要有人站出来完成它,填补历史的空白,让下一代能够知道爷爷奶奶是怎样生活得,很有意义。一辈子做几件这样有意义的事,真的不枉此生。”
1947年出生于霹雳怡保的谢锡明,因在8兄弟姐妹的大家庭中长大,家境贫苦而对生活有着特别深的感受。中学时期,每天在巴刹帮人拿鱼帮补家计,忙完后,有时受朋友邀请去写生作画,而萌发对画画的兴趣。努力加上天赋,他的画作常被老师选来参赛。
“有一天我在想,每天在巴刹也不是办法,看不到未来的路。所以决定到新加波南洋美专深造。”
1969年谢锡明正式为自己的梦想踏出了重要一步,来到南洋美专,展开了工读生涯,以当校工的方式抵免学费。也无能力购买练习用的水彩纸,只好把别人用过的水彩纸洗干净后再度使用。
后来由于受到老师的刁难,如自己满意的画作老师偏偏诸多批评,及在班上发问得不到解答,反被怪什么都不懂。1971年,谢锡明尚未正式毕业便离开了南洋美专。年纪轻轻的他已展现出艺术家的个性。
至于自己画艺的特点,谢锡明认为自己画东西比较大胆,勇于创新、不死板,并以19世纪后期俄罗斯批判现实主义绘画大师列宾和20世纪德国女画家凯娞·珂勒慧支为学习对象。
“我画人最注重眼睛和嘴巴,因为它们表露一个人的内心世界,这两部分会说话。”
“列宾善于画历史画、人体画,功力深厚,人本三分,把人的生命力带出来,感情洋溢,让观者深有感受。”
巫老师补充道,谢老师对自己的要求十分高,因此画得时候非常用心,踏踏实实。她也出示了几幅一摸一样的画作,称谢老师有的画甚至画十遍以上,精益求精。

作画一丝不苟
谢老师对作画的认真和投入,可从其一些动作窥探出,如出门会随身带相机,以便随时拍下难见的一幕,作为日后的画材。
“有一次谢老师为画尸体,竟然进入一宗自杀案的案发现场去拍,警察也不敢进来赶,只是在一段距离招手命令谢老师离开。”巫老师说。
“除此,尤其在画历史人物肖像之前,谢老师会大量阅读绘画对象的生平故事,务求加深了解以及酝酿情感。”
在谢老师离开南洋美专后,他回到霹雳当建筑工人,后来到巴生加入一家企业的广告部门,在那里认识了太太巫雪英。
两位艺术家成家后,决定从事美术教育,在来一间租来的小小住家开绘画班。为了节俭开销,上课时都把孩子带在身边。忙的时候,早上煮一餐便吃三餐一直到晚上。
“当时候确实物质生活匮乏,不过理想是我们的精神支柱。”
夫妇俩一同教画30余年,形影不离,一同为理想、为教育三个儿女而奋斗。有趣的是,谢老师的家庭是男主内,女主外的,所谓的“内”是指谢老师内心的世界。木讷刚直的谢老师,相对于语言,他更善于用色彩与线条来编制他的内心世界,以及通过画作来诠释他的真善美。

艺术路上相濡以沫
太太则管理行政工作,给予丈夫全力支持,让他可以专注画画。对许多人而言,或许是愿憬的美满生活。
谢锡明十分感激太太的付出,看到太太辛苦心疼,只有更努力画画。
“许多人羡慕我有个好太太,无怨无悔地默默付出。我无以为报,只能更努力画画。”
回望过去的路,巫老师亦难忍心酸而掉泪。不过她还是认为值得的,是一种福气。
当被询及为什么把画廊取名“万绿”,谢老师解释道,世界环境污染日益严重,已成为全人类的最大问题,去这样的名字是为了唤起人类对环保的意识。
谢老师还提到,绘画不只是纯粹追求美观享受,艺术是美的载体,也是哲学思想的表现,始终抱持艺术为人文服务,以服务人文为艺术目标,“简单来说,关注社会,实践人文关怀是为画作注入内涵与生命。”谈到今时的教育,谢老师认为现在的学校只注重成绩,太过功利了。而且在教育体系中,缺少了美学和人文成分,成为一种缺陷。
“过去我们那个时代,老师教导德智体美群,可惜现在不兴此道。希望透过艺术来能弥补这一切,完成学校教育未竟之事。”
这也是为什么谢老师夫妇执教30年仍未言倦的动力。

艺术引领世人返璞归真
“鲁迅放下听筒去当作家唤醒人类,身为画家的也可以如法炮制,用艺术来感染世人,以达到更高的境界……我相信当人类走到了尽头便会返璞归真的。”
不过一讲到艺术家的地位,谢老师似乎心有戚戚焉。他感觉艺术家尤其在这区域非常不受重视。虽然这30多年来不断地力争举办个人画展,却在这个现实言利的社会上处处碰壁。辗转30年,终于在三年前才成功举办了一个“渴望一个和平天空”,并获得崇高的评价。
这对谢老师来说只不过是一个开始,丹青不知老将至,富贵于我如浮云。谢老师将会再接再厉,让更多的人得以能浸浴在艺术中。
“这是一条永无止境的道路,虽然辛苦,不过会一直走下去。”
离开前,在万绿门口发现了谢老师的一首诗词作,也许这便是他的心声写照,就用来作为本文的总结吧:
一根秃笔舞狂风
天地万物人物涂
轻弹人间甜、惊、苦、怒、丑、辛事
一切都在我画中

Cheah Sek Meng
-The Desire for a Peaceful Sky
A little girl who looks sad – is she worrying about tomorrow, or the future of mankind is what lingers in her mind?
An old Chinese man – who is struggling to make a living in Malaya – walks in the street.
The old Malaya where the Malays, Chinese and Indians are mingling naturally – an everyday lifestyle which presents our muhibbah spirit.
These are the stories depicted by Cheah Sek Meng’s artwork. The painter’s works, which are displayed at his gallery Green World Art Centre located in Bukit Tinggi, Klang, are all about the stories of our everyday life. When it comes to drawing and painting, facial expression certainly requires the highest skills. The more challenging it is, the more Cheah is motivated to embrace it. And looking at his works which none was drawn without a human character, we would come to understand his works are influenced by Russia’s realistic painter Ilya Yefimovich Repin, as well as expressionist painters and sculptors from Germany.
Reproducing what he witnessed during his childhood, his works are perhaps the best historical account of his era in arts. Despite the connectivity between his works and our society and history – a sense of kinship or brotherhood among Malaysians or at large, Southeast Asians – Cheah admitted the market for his works is limited.
“I started my painting career because I have this mission to become a painter. I started as a painter and I will end up a painter,” said Cheah.
Cheah’s remarks are indeed echoing Will Smith’s famous saying – ‘this is what I believe, and I am willing to die for it’.
Cheah, who received his art education at Nanyang Academy of Art inSingapore, is critical of current education system.
“Our education is too result-oriented. This is too realistic. Education without philosophy, without aesthetics is certainly a failure.”
Despite the adversity throughout his 30-year painting career, Cheah managed to organise his own artwork exhibition known as The Desire for a Peaceful Sky in 2011 and received tremendous feedback from the society.
Re-examining his achievement in arts, Cheah attributed his success to his wife who is also a painter. It has been his wife who is taking care of the family and allowing him to focus on his painting. And his wife is even answering questions of the reporters on his behalf – for Cheah is an introvert who is good only when it comes to drawing and painting.

As what is described by his poem displayed at his centre’s doorstep – our happiness, sadness, fear, anticipation, and ups and downs in life – are all presented in his painting. Cheah said he paid more attention to eyes and mouth, for he thinks there are our organs which tell a story. For viewers like us, Cheah’s works are our stories, our history – a painting is worth a thousand words – is perhaps the best description of Cheah’s works.
